The Testosterone Train: What about the Men?

Men’s skin care is simple. Generally speaking, you want to make sure you’re cleansing twice a day and applying moisturizer and sunscreen.  The key is to remember to take care of your skin twice a day every day.  Many men don’t take the time to do this because they think it’s girly.  Proper skin care is just as important as brushing your teeth, guys!

Men suffer from ingrown facial hairs- what helps this is exfoliation.  Because most men aren’t going to take the time to apply a facial mask, wait for it to dry, wash it off, and moisturize afterwards, I recommend sticking with a cleanser that HAS an exfoliator in it.  In fact the cleanser I recommend to most of my male clients has a cleanser, exfoliator, and freshener all in one tube.  Wash once, take care of three different things at once.  The multi-tasking man!

Yes.  Moisturizer is important.  You want your skin to be soft and smooth.  Your significant other WILL complain otherwise.  But you don’t want to take the time to moisturize AND apply sunscreen, plus you don’t want to buy all the different products.  Fine—  apply a moisturizer that doubles as a sunscreen.  Be a minimalist, but take care of your skin!

IF you’re willing to do a bit more, applying vitamins A, C, and E to your skin is important for protecting against UVA rays that age and UVB rays that burn.  You can read more about that elsewhere on this blog.  I’d say only about half of my male clients are willing to go that far.  Most want to wash, moisturize, and go.  And as long as the cleanser ALSO exfoliates, and the moisturizer ALSO has sunscreen, that’s enough for the man who doesn’t want a shelf full of “girly” products.  :)

Some men find that shaving goes more smoothly when using a glycerin or aloe-based shaving cream or gel. These products will soothe your skin, and in addition they will allow your razor to glide across your face. Always shave WITH the grain, not against it.
