Skin Care Tips For Black Women

16th May 2010 by heatherprice 1 Comment

I happen to be a very ivory-skinned Jewish white girl.  I know my own skin very well.  In the course of my career I’ve had clients of all colors and skin types and it’s good to know what makes the skin of a black woman different so that I know what to recommend in terms of products and in terms of routine.

Firstly, darker skin may have a tendency to appear ashy when it’s not well moisturized.  For dark skin, it’s best to apply moisturizer to damp skin; the skin will be better able to hold in the moisture.

Secondly, black skin DOES need sunscreen.  The darker you are, the less likely you are to suffer a sunburn.  Don’t let this fool you:  you need a sunscreen which protects both against UVA rays that age and UVB rays that burn (they don’t only burn— they damage the skin!).  I recommend a product which contains vitamins A, C, and E and takes the place of a traditional facial sunscreen.

Black skin has a tendency to develop keloids– scar tissue which comes from surgical incisions, or in this case, picking at pimples.  Don’t pick!  Use a cleanser and moisturizer specifically formulated for your type of skin, whether it’s dry or oily.  Ask your skin care consultant about products which help erase dark spots, acne scars, and hyperpigmentation.

I’d be thrilled to be your personal skin care consultant.  Email me with your skin care questions at heatheramyprice@gmail.com and I’ll help you out!

Heather Price of Cleveland, OH, has been a skin care and beauty consultant since August of 2000. The New Scarface: Your Skin and Scarring….

3rd May 2010 by heatherprice 3 Comments

Natural Skin Care for Acne Scars

Acne medications may get rid of current acne breakouts, but most of them don’t do anything to help with acne scars or other skin issues left behind after the acne clears.  There are plenty of procedures you can go through to get rid of scars, but they are expensive and often painful.  And do you really want to go through skin grafts and other surgeries to get rid of your scars?

Natural products and recipes may not only help clear your acne, they can also help get rid of your acne scars and improve the general health of your skin.  Plus, they don’t expose you to dangerous chemicals or procedures.

Here are some natural, at-home cures to help get rid of your acne scars (and often your acne).  Plus, many of them will improve the general quality of your skin as well.

Aloe Vera Juice.  Apply directly to scars with a cotton ball or towel.  Let it soak for 10-15 minutes and rinse.  Aloe is also known to treat burns and ease itchy dry skin.

Tomato.  Lay down and put tomato slices directly onto acne scars.  Allow to sit for a few minutes, then rinse clean.  The nutrients in the tomatoes will not only help remove scars, but also help soothe inflamed skin.

Lemon Juice.  Apply with cotton ball or towel.  Allow to sit for abut ten minutes and rinse with water.  The acid in the juice helps slough off skin damaged by acne so new, healthy skin can shine through.

Lavender.  Massage Lavender oil into the skin at bedtime.  Rinse it off when you wake up in the morning.  Plus, Lavender has and aromatherapy effect that will help relax you and help ease you to sleep.

Cucumber.  Apply the juice to your scars and let sit for 15 minutes, then rinse.  This will help close up pores and slowly reduce scars.  You can also combine the power of tomato and cucumber together in a paste to make a masque that has double power to remove your scars.

Olive oil.  Instead of your regular facial moisturizer, try massaging some quality extra virgin olive oil into your face.  This will help soothe inflammation, moisturize, and reduce the appearance of acne scars.

Honey.  Whether you have acne scars or not, honey is one of the best natural moisturizers you can use.  Helping remove the scars is just one of the added benefits.

Egg whites.  After you separate out the yolk, apply egg whites to your face and allow to dry for about 15 minutes.  Rinse off and you’ll find not only that scars and overall redness disappear, but it also closes pores in just one use.

There are all kinds of products on the market that claim they can remove acne scars completely.  If a product says this, it probably is really too good to be true.  Removing acne scars is going to take time.  Remember to be patient because the effect will be gradual.  If you’ve been using one treatment for a while and haven’t seen any results, move on to something else.  The key is to have patience and keep trying until you find what works for you.

Prepping Pretty Spring Skin

This lovely lady Sarah and I are swapping articles.  You know I normally promote the particular skin care line I use and recommend (don’t know what I represent?  Join my opt in list over there to the right— I’ve started an ezine which comes out every other Wednesday— from there you’ll learn all about the skin care products I recommend!).  But from time to time I’m very happy to promote other skin care lines or programs if they are applicable to my readers.  Thank you for this content, Sarah!  Readers: enjoy!

Prepping Pretty Spring Skin

When the sun finally begins to warm our faces again, and the world slowly looks a little greener, we always feel the need to freshen up our looks a bit. In an enthusiastic hurry to apply this season’s bright makeup colors, we may forget to stop and realize that the most important step is good skincare for a clean, smooth base. After the cold wind, dry heating systems, and dark days are done with our faces, most of us go into springtime looking a little dull.

To bring your face back to life, there are some basics that always help whether you’re at a spa or your bathroom sink. Firstly, be sure to exfoliate: it can be as simple as adding salt (for oily skin) or sugar (for dry skin) to your face wash or buying one with exfoliating beads in it. It always helps to add a product with something like fruit enzymes or hydroxy acids into your regimen for added results. Going to get microdermabrasion at a local spa is a great choice for deep exfoliation that will be noticed right away. Any of these options will reveal fresh skin that is glowing and smooth.

Second, you need to continuously moisturize to have skin perfect for makeup application. If you’re getting a facial at a spa, that’s great because they will both exfoliate and moisture your skin while you’re there. At home, be sure you’re using a formula appropriate for your skin type, like a gel for oily skin, a thicker cream for dry, or something in between. Some of the face lotions with radiance/skin brightening ingredients are perfect for dewy spring skin, and are a nice boost for any look.

If we just take a little extra care in reviving skin at this time of year, the reward will be a complexion that’s more awake and well-textured. Your face will look flawless all season long!

Rosacea — it’s not so rosy

20th April 2010 by heatherprice No Comments

Rosacea Herbal Remedies  (PLR article)

If you have rosacea, you’ve probably had many appointments with your dermatologist, but probably haven’t found the right remedy yet.  For rosacea sufferers choosing the right treatment is important because while some people find relief from prescription medication, many don’t and can even see an increase in pain and redness.

What is Rosacea?

Rosacea is a skin condition often mistaken for acne.  Those with rosacea not only experience acne-like pustules, but also often have red skin, small visible capilarries, blush easily, and sometimes have a red, swollen nose.  While these symptoms are mostly just superficial, they can be detrimental to the sufferer’s self esteem and emotional health.  Especially since most people with rosacea are older than the average acne sufferer.

Relief from Rosacea:

While nothing cures rosacea permanently, many people have found relief and significant improvement from herbal remedies.  Here are just a few herbal medications that may be able to offer you some relief.

* Licorice.   The herb, not the candy.  It can be applied topically once a day to help reduce facial redness.

* Green Tea.  Green tea is recommended for treating all sorts of conditions, including rosacea.  While drinking it helps, you can get more high powered treatment by applying the tea directly to your skin.  There are creams that are manufactured that you can apply daily to your face and other affected areas.

* B Vitamins.  Some studies have shown that rosacea symptoms can be correlated to a deficiency of riboflavin, a type or B vitamin.   Creams containing Niacinamide, which is a type of B3, have also been used topically to reduce swelling and treat rosacea.

* Apple Cider Vinegar.  This has been touted as a natural cure to almost any skin issue along with other illnesses.  Many doctors believe that rosacea symptoms may actually be caused by a digestive disorder. Try drinking a glass of water with a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar in it to aid digestion and ease symptoms.  You may also consider taking digestive enzymes, especially if you also have indigestion.

* Azealiac Acid.  This is available in cream form and helps fight the bacterium that causes the pustules associated with rosacea.

Remember when using alternative cures for rosacea or anything else, that herbal or natural does not necessarily mean safe.  You should always use tested and trusted products and always check with your doctor or medical professional before using any herbal remedy.

While all of these treatments have been shown to be effective against rosacea, they’ve also been shown to take several months to work.  Just like traditional treatments, they aren’t going to work overnight.  But if you have patience, you should eventually see results.

In addition to adding herbal remedies to your rosacea treatment, there are some things you might want to take out of your daily routine to treat your symptoms.

Many doctors believe rosacea and other skin conditions are caused by allergies to food or chemicals that come in contact with the skin.  Try keeping a journal of diet, skin care products, and the condition of your skin.  You may find that specific things trigger symptoms.  If you know what they are, then you can avoid them and find relief naturally.

As always, I’m here to help you with your skin care concerns.  You can email me privately at heatheramyprice@gmail.com and tell me what skin care products you’re using and what your concern is.  I can help!  –Heather

It’s a Stretch

4th March 2010 by heatherprice 2 Comments

I don’t claim to be an expert on the subject of stretch marks, but I *will* say that I’m 5′2″ and was pregnant with twins three years ago.  I was pleasantly surprised that stretch marks didn’t get me worse than they did— I was prepared for the worst.  Thankfully, the product I used (and still use, and would happily recommend to you– just email me privately at heatheramyprice (at) gmail (dot) com to ask what I use) actually worked to prevent stretch marks from taking over my life.

In today’s Beauty Exclusives from Paula Begoun, Paula goes over some of the reasons for stretch marks:  when skin is stretched for a period of time from pregnancy or weight gain, it causes the skin’s support structure (elastin and collagen) to break down or even come apart completely.  The ends of each stretch mark are broken bands of elastin.  You can think of a stretch mark as a scar that forms from the inside out.

Paula reminds us and stressed that there is NO scientific proof that cosmetic ingredients or skin care products can actually prevent or improve the appearance of stretch marks.  However, the product I use, as well as many other products, have been proven to help (unscientifically– just ask a group of moms!)

For severe problems, you might consider tretinoin (the active ingredient in Retin-A).  IPL therapy or chemical peels can also be indicated- check with your dermatologist.

For a minor stretch mark problem, call me- I can help.  :)   216-870-3142.  I use a body lotion which includes a patented complex which helps to reduce the visible signs of aging.  It provides up to ten hours of moisturization.  The company claims that it reduces the appearance of dry skin and helps even the skin tone— they do not make any official claims about stretch marks.  However, my mom friends and I all agree:  IT HELPS WITH STRETCH MARKS!

Expert tips to ensure your beauty efforts outlast the busiest days

(ARA) – What woman doesn’t dream of looking as fresh at the end of the day as she did when she looked in the mirror that morning, with perfect hair and makeup? Invariably, however, by the end of the day, hair goes flat, mascara smudges and manicures chip.

As a result, women hunt for tips to maintain a beautiful look that will outlast a full day and still look great into the evening. Ying Chu, beauty and health director for “Marie Claire” magazine, sees this dilemma first-hand. “Women are busier than ever these days juggling multiple commitments,” she says, “and as a result it has become a priority to seek out beauty buys from trusted brands that are not only long-lasting, but budget friendly.”

Follow her beauty tips to achieve a fresh look that will outlast even the busiest schedule:

* Before applying your makeup, use a mattifying primer first. Because it absorbs oil throughout the day, it prevents oil from breaking down your makeup, making it last longer.

* To help face and eye makeup last throughout the day, apply a cream formula first, then layer on a powder over top to set it, like CoverGirl TruBlend MicroMinerals Finishing Veil.

* Fresh breath and a sparkling smile are always a must to top off your look. New Scope Outlast mouthwash and Crest Extra White Plus Scope Outlast toothpaste feature Outlast technology that delivers a cool, minty sensation for a fresh breath feeling that lasts up to five times longer than brushing alone with ordinary toothpaste.

* Long, full eyelashes can enhance any look. To ensure your lashes remain lengthy and curled, start by layering a waterproof sealant, like Clarins Double Fix mascara, or any waterproof mascara over your regular mascara. It will make your mascara last without being impossible to remove.

* Keep your nails in tip-top shape and extend the life of a manicure or pedicure by adding a clear topcoat to your nails every other day like Essie Good To Go! Topcoat. This will help avoid chipping as you go about your busy schedule.

* Fragrance is a way for a woman to express herself. To make sure your signature scent lasts, choose fragrances that have high concentrations, such as a parfum, over an eau de toilette. Fragrance will last longer on well-moisturized skin, so layer a complementary body cream or oil on your skin before spraying.

With these long-lasting insider beauty tips, you will be sure to outlast any whirlwind of events and still look fresh.

The American Society of Breast Disease has created the Mary Kay Ash Advanced Training Program in Oncoplastic Breast Surgery. The Foundation has awarded a $225,000 grant to support this innovative program to train breast surgeons in the emerging field.

The March 15, 2009, issue of Genes & Development reported that a study funded in part by the Mary Kay Ash Charitable Foundation produced a cancer research breakthrough. Led by Dr. Roger Greenberg, a 2008 cancer research grant recipient, researchers found that MERIT40, a previously unknown protein, works with other breast cancer genes to help repair damaged DNA.

Since 2003, The Mary Kay Foundation has given $1.3 million to the National Network to End Domestic Violence’s Safety Net Program. The Safety Net team works tirelessly to raise women’s awareness of safety issues concerning the use of technology. In 2007, the Foundation granted Safety Net $200,000 to develop, produce and distribute a CD-ROM titled, Survivors and Technology: An Interactive Safety Planning Tool. In 2008, the Foundation granted funds for translating the CD-ROM into Spanish.
